Backstory Behind the Commission

ArtCorgi (AC): What inspired you to commission this piece?

Michael (M): Ben and Toby are notoriously photo shy, we actually have no pictures of the 3 of us! I thought commissioning a piece of art through ArtCorgi was the perfect solution.

I was looking for a fun, colorful and whimsical family portrait in an iconic DC setting and Nell definitely delivered! I couldn’t be happier.

AC: What is your favorite thing about DC as a city?

(M): I was born and raised in the DC area, so I have a natural attachment to the city. I love how the city has 4 distinct seasons, and how the city has a totally different feel depending on whether it’s winter, spring, summer or fall. I find DC especially beautiful in the spring, when the cherry blossoms are in bloom. Everyone definitely has to see them in person at least once in their lifetime! I definitely wanted to incorporate the blossoms into the piece.

AC: Have you commissioned art before? What advice would you give to a first-timer?

(M): This was the first piece i’ve ever commissioned! I would recommend being totally honest about what you want and don’t feel bad about harping on little details–it’s your piece after all! Nell’s preliminary sketch was amazing, but I still wanted little tweaks with facial expressions and outfits. Nell took the feedback and came back with a perfect finished product!
